100 years ago today, on the 25th of April 1915, Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula. These became known as ANZACS and the pride they took in that name continues to this day. ANZAC Day is one of Australia’s most important national commemorative occasions marking the anniversary of this first major military action, and today includes the remembrance of all Australians killed in military operations. May they rest in peace.
They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow,
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Lest we forget
