July 2013 – Trip Update
July 10/11:
Para Medic Shane “Doc” Palmer from New Zealand, (A volunteer with SAVCG) conducted First Aid refresher courses at KOTO Sai Gon Training Centre and Friends For Street Children Association (FFSC) Staff at Bien Trieu Development Centre Sai Gon.
July 14:
Wayne HONEYCHURCH and “Doc” attend the Hermanus Hospitallers Catholic Orphanage, Ba Ria along with Vung Tau Eye Doctor Mr. Sy.
“Doc” donated a medical Suction Unit and provided training to the Staff and carried out health checks on the residents.
List of needed supplies received from the Staff.
Meeting with a local Water Filtration contractor who took further water samples from the well which is used all year round by the Orphanage. The samples were taken for testing and also a plan of the site to quote on the supply and installation of a suitable filtration system.
July 15,
Wayne returned to Sai Gon for meetings with Jimmy PHAM, AM of KOTO and with Sister Trish FRANKLIN from Loreto Viet Nam.
July 16:
Ryk TRAEGER took tour group to the Mekong Delta area to show everyone around.
Wayne attended a meeting with Sister Thao from FFSC at Bien Trieu DC who advised that they were in need of 6 meal tables, 20 Mattresses and 6 desks. The request was authorised and also a pledge to pay for water filtration servicing for another 12 months.
July 17:
Wayne returns to Vung Tau for meeting with Eye Doctor and they again attend the Catholic Orphanage at Ba Ria where the Eye Doctor finished planning for his attendance to check the eyes of the 110 residents.
July 18:
Travel to the Ba Ria Government Orphanage (built by Australians during the War). Ascertained what was needed in the way of supplies and made an assessment of the water supply with the aim of providing filtration in the future.
Meeting held with Mr. PHONG, the Deputy Chairman of the Long Phuoc Peoples Committee, and the Chief and 2IC of the Local Police and other Committee members.
A decision was made to change the format of our usual food pack delivery to approximately 250 impoverished villagers around Nui Dat. 150 would be distributed on the 25th. The other 100 would then be delivered by SAVCG Chairperson, Lloyd STEVENS, when he arrived in August to carry out further work.
Invitation extended to Ryk and Wayne to attend the Local Veterans day celebrations to be held on the 27th at the Long Phuoc Pagoda.
July 19:
Quote of $1,400-00 accepted for the filtration project at the Catholic Orphanage.
Met the contractor on site and the system and installation arranged.
July 20:
To Ba Ria Market to pick up supplies and deliver to the Catholic Orphanage.
Mr. SY and 2 of his staff conducted eye tests on everybody and then he issued glasses to those who needed them. Mr. SY graciously donated his services and the glasses.
There is a possibility that a Dentist may become a partner of SAVCG in future.
July 21:
Wayne returns to Sai Gon to meet up with Touring Group.
July 23:
Group visits FFSC DC with Sister Thao. Table, Desks and bedding had been delivered.
July 24:
Group travels to Vung Tau by Ferry.
July 25:
150 impoverished people were provided with meal packs (5kg rice, large pack of Noodles and a bottle of Soy Sauce) at the Nui Dat Community Hall.
July 26:
To Ba Ria and deliver supplies to the Government Orphanage.
Water contractor also attended and took water samples for testing and made an assessment of requirements to filter the water. A quote is to be prepared for this work at a later date.
July 27:
Wayne and Ryk attend at Long Phuoc Pagoda for Vietnamese Veterans Day Ceremony.
July 28:
Return to Sai Gon.
July 29:
Wayne met with Sister Pascale, the Principal of the Vocational Training Centre for disadvantaged youth near Ba Ria.
July 31:
Wayne back to the Catholic Orphanage, Ba Ria to check the completed Filtration Installation. Returned to Sai Gon.
August 1 + 2
Advised that a washing machine at FFSC Bihn Trieu, was having problems. Authorised and paid for the repairs.
Returned to Australia.
