Water to the children are proud to announce the successful installation of our second water filtration plant in Vietnam!
8 months ago during our last project we came across an orphanage in dire need of clean water. We decided to use a different system this time and were able to utilise a large roof surface to collect and harvest rain water. This particular orphanage is home to some 140 children, most of which have skin conditions as a result of dirty water for drinking and showering. Most of their baby teeth are also rotten, again because of a poor water supply.
This project was mostly funded by the Saint Frances de Sales Catholic school. A large group of volunteer students raised money throughout the course of the school year and finished it off with a difficult walk across the Adelaide Hills in very wet and blustery conditions. Well done kids, it wouldn’t have happened without you. A HUGE thank you to Michael Paay – this initiative was his idea. “From little things, big things grow”….. now some of the most gorgeous young kids you’ll ever meet can lead a healthier life and just as importantly, be on the look out for clean drinking water for the rest of their lives.
In addition to the water system we installed ventilation in the kitchen as the hard working volunteers every day work in the kitchen filled with smoke. The walls are black and simply standing in there for 5 minutes was a real challenge. No longer!
A big thank you to the people that helped make this happen:
– Ms Suong our translator whom again demonstrated that she is worth her own weight in gold!
– Mr Michael Paay and the Saint Francis de Sales School for raising the money.
– The boys that volunteer at the orphanage and worked with us every day, to complete the job. These guys have no families and no jobs so they frequent to the orphange daily to look after it. We taught them many new construction techniques, paid them for the efforts and most importantly, drank lots of beer with them upon completion.
– Our parents for coming over to Vietnam to see the installation and support us. Having them with us was a real highlight for us.
– The people at SkyJuice Foundation for providing us with an excellent filtration unit that Chris brought from Australia.
– The Huttons for taking it upon themselves to generously organise a fundraising event at their own home. They also continue to support our efforts.
– All of you for your help and support. Through the hands of Water for the Children you are all making a considerable difference in a place that is in desperate need for help.
We know we’ve forgotten to mention some people and for that we sincerely apologise, however as you can see this post is already very long.
It will be quite some time before we do this again, as Chris is about to have his first child with his lovely partner Hong, and Dion is establishing his new home in Canada.
Please stay tuned however, as whilst we won’t be here for another 12 months at least, we have some exciting events taking place to raise more money.
Until next time folks, stay safe and always remember…. the water YOU drink every day is a luxury item you’re blessed with. Many people throughout the world are not….
